Founded in 1923 in the province of Varese and further developed in 1935, Rossi di Albizzate soon gained a leading role in the Made in Italy design sector, reaching the peak of its success in the 1970s thanks to the innovative ideas of its owner, Giuseppe Rossi, and the creativity of the designers and planners who collaborated with him over time.
Rossi di Albizzate, recently acquired, is being restructured and preparing for its next 100 years with new collaborations, collections and markets in the name of contemporary design, quality and respect for the environment.
History
-
1923
Giuseppe Rossi worked in Arsago in the family business with his brother Felice, manufacturing and selling mattresses, upholstery and saddlery.
-
1935
Separated from his brother, Giuseppe Rossi founded the company of the same name in Cavaria with his wife, Maria Saporiti.
-
1939
Giuseppe solved the coexistence of two different functions in the mechanism: he created the armchair-bed Confortevole, the first in a long series of patents.
-
1951
Production and family moved to Albizzate, where the company name was changed in 1980.
-
1955
A collaboration began with architect G. Vitelli followed by T. Ammannati, which lasted until the 1970s. A step that would mark a creative turning point and bring Rossi di Albizzate to the Museum of Italian Design, Triennale Milano.
-
1961
Rossi di Albizzate was among the founders of what was to become the most important design fair in the world: the Salone del Mobile in Milan. It would preside over its vice-presidency for years.
-
1964
Experiments with cold-foamed polyurethane began. In the second half of the 1960s, the RoFoam mixture was patented, which not only enabled formal freedom, but also guaranteed greater comfort and durability.
-
1969
Vitelli and Ammannati design Grandangolo, the world's first modular sofa in cold-foamed PU, with a continuous seating system. Soon the design baton will pass to C. Bartoli, future Compasso d'Oro alla Carriera.
-
1975/76
Bartoli opened showrooms in Milan and Rome, in two exclusive locations. In 1976, a partnership was formed with the fashion house Borbonese for the exclusive use of partridge-eye leather.
-
1980 – 1990
Architect Bartoli was joined by architect Salocchi. In the early 1990s, a generational changeover took place with sons Luigi and Piero. New collaborations with various designers began. A second product entered the Italian Design Museum.
-
2010
After Giuseppe's death and the monograph published by Electa on the company's history in 2005, the Company Museum was inaugurated in 2010, narrating the value of Rossi di Albizzate for Italian design.
-
2022
The brand was taken over and licensed to the Milan-based Luxur-IT, with the intention of modernising its corporate structure, offer and markets in a new sustainable way, while preserving its cultural heritage.
Museum

— Decades of continuous evolution
The Rossi Company Museum in Albizzate is a permanent exhibition space of 900 square metres in the structure designed by architects A. Magnaghi and M. Terzaghi. Curated by the Rossi brothers themselves, it contains part of the company's production from its beginnings to the present day.
It was founded in 2010 to celebrate the company's long history and to promote, enhance and pass on the brand's rich cultural and historical heritage.
In 2015, the Company Museum was expanded to house additional pieces that belong to the history of Rossi di Albizzate and contribute to that of Italian Design. Currently undergoing restoration, it will soon be reopened to the public.
